AFTRS Queensland has two great courses coming up next month with small class sizes for individual attention.
DVD AUTHORINGCourse Description
This newly expanded course is an introduction to custom DVD production using Apple's DVD Studio Pro 4 software and is suitable for filmmakers who intend to use DVD as a distribution medium for documentaries, short films or showreels. The course is a combination of hands-on and theory, covering all areas of DVD-Video production, but will NOT cover Interactive DVD-ROM production. The first day of the course is dedicated to use of Photoshop software in conjunction with DVD Studio Pro and Motion to prepare and design interface elements.
What you will learn
This course aims to provide participants with an intensive introduction to DVD production. Topics covered include:
- Menu design and preparation in Photoshop
- Planning and budgeting for DVD
- Interface design, flowcharting and project management
- Creating Templates
- MPEG encoding of video
- Authoring a project
- Motion Menus
- Subtitling
- Advanced Authoring & Scripting
- Overview of glass mastering and replication processes
- Overview of relevant sound formats for DVD eg Dolby 5.1
- By the end of the course participants should be able to use DVD Studio Pro to create a custom DVD.
Course Delivery
This is a hands-on course and each student will be allocated an Apple G5 computer for the whole 3-day duration. The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations, question and answer sessions and intensive practical production exercises.
Prior experience with packages such as Photoshop, After Effects, Combustion, AVID or Final Cut Pro is desirable. The course is intended primarily for filmmakers and designers.

Course Director
Tim Patterson graduated with a MA from RMIT's Dept Visual Communication, majoring in Film & Video Production and Sound Production. He has written, directed, produced and edited a number of projects, including the award winning documentary ...In Twenty Words or Less. He has worked extensively in the post-production industry on feature films and corporate productions and for an Apple reseller configuring and supporting Final Cut Pro and DVD authoring systems. He currently works as a screenwriter and freelances as a motion graphic designer / DVD authorer/producer.

As far as possible participants are matched in terms of experience and levels of competence. In case of cancellations by participants less than one week prior to the course commencement, 20% of the course fee will be retained by AFTRS. No refund will be given after the commencement date of the course. The AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course in which case fees received will be refunded in full. Successful completion of this course may be included in recognition of prior learning or the granting of credit should you be admitted

AFTER EFFECTSCourse Description This course provides a detailed introduction to desktop compositing for moving images using Adobe After Effects, a program that allows a new level of creative freedom for designers, animators, art directors or editors. Participants will gain an understanding of the desktop digital compositing environment including complimentary tools, applications and professional production concerns. Other topics include; workflow from other applications, effects controls, dynamic masking, blue screen keying and an introduction to rotoscoping using Photoshop and Vector Paint. On satisfactorily completing this course, students will receive an AFTRS Course Certificate. What you will learn Participants will be introduced to compositing techniques including layering, editing and sequencing of images for digital video output. By the end of the course participants should be equipped with an understanding of how to produce high quality motion graphics sequences on the desktop using After Effects. Course Delivery The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations, question and answer sessions and intensive practical production exercises. It is suited to practitioners who use desktop systems such as Edit, AVID, Final Cut Pro or Media 100, titles and broadcast designers, interactive media producers, graphic designers or art directors wanting creative control over production prototypes. Course Lecturer Belinda Bennetts has a degree in Graphic Design and migrated early from print to design for broadcast and VFX. She has worked as a television broadcast designer at ABCTV as well as at Animal Logic as a titles designer and visual effects art director and supervisor. Her work on broadcast titles includes: East West 101, Six Degrees, White Collar Blue, A Difficult Woman, Wildside, Brides of Christ and Come in Spinner. Belinda’s film credits include: Title designer and VFX Supervisor on Charlotte Gray, VFX Art Director on Moulin Rouge, and title designer on Death Defying Acts, Praise, The Truman Show, Oscar and Lucinda, Doing Time for Patsy Cline, Paradise Road, Little Women and Black Robe.
