SECRET RULERS OF THE WORLD + Q&A WITH U.K FILMMAKER / AUTHOR JON RONSON Wed, Sept 5th, 2007 - 7:30pm - GU Bondi, Rated R-18+ Entry: $16 / $14 - BUY TICKETS NOW HERE
SECRET RULERS OF THE WORLD is a series of documentary films written, directed and featuring British journalist and best-selling author Jon Ronson (THEM: ADVENTURES WITH EXTREMISTS, THE MEN WHO STARED AT GOATS). The series was first shown on Britain's Channel Four back in 2001, but sadly never went air in Australia or ever released on DVD.
Based on his book THEM: ADVENTURES WITH EXTREMISTS, Secret Rulers employs Ronson's distinctive self-deprecating, and often humorous reporting style, focusing on the conspiracy theorists in America who believe that the world is being run by a 'shadowy elite'. This program features two of the most talked about episodes from the series, THE BILDERBERG GROUP and THE SATANIC SHADOWY ELITE.
In THE BILDERBERG GROUP, Ronson teams up with reporter James P. Tucker, Jr, who has been investigating the Bilderberg Group, an annual invitation-only conference, rumoured to secretly rule the world for over thirty years. According to Tucker, around 130 guests, most of whom are persons of influence in business, academic, or political circles (including Presidents), meet in secret annually. Just when it all seams too far fetched, the duo encounter unwelcoming suited security men and are chased by mysterious black vehicles. In this episode you will find out if THE BILDERBERG GROUP really exists.
In THE SATANIC SHADOWY ELITE, Ronson follows theorist and radio host Alex Jones as he attempts to infiltrate the annual gathering of dignitaries and business leaders (reportedly including George Bush and Henry Kissinger) at Bohemian Grove, California. The film includes exclusive, eye opening footage footage of attendees dressed in robes and burning an effigy at the foot of a giant stone owl. Jones believes that the ceremony is related to occult secret societies.
Join us for what may be your only chance to see Secret Rulers in Australia! Following the screening, Popcorn Taxi is please to present an audience Q&A session (via phone) with Jon Ronson in London. How far do you have to go to go too far on television? Disinformation found out when it got it's own show on the UK's Channel Four network. Hosted by director and co-creator Richard Metzger, Disinformation is what you get when "60 Minutes" reaches for the meth pipe, making "Jackass" look lame.
When you watch television, you get reality, or what major multi national corporations want you to accept as reality. Who ever controls what you see, controls what you think, that's why its called 'programming'. Host Richard Metzger wants you to think of Disinformation as 'de-programming'. The show takes the viewer on a hilarious and often disturbing tour of underground culture in America today featuring a collection of weird and unusual segments, from fringe tech and freak science, to erotic time machines, radionics, urban Satanists and the violent hillbilly hijinks of the now legendary "Uncle Goddamn"videos.
After the first episode aired, Channel Four's censors went into a panic, resulting in the network hacking out substantial chunks of Metzger's counter-culture mind bomb. What did make it into people's homes in the U.K. became an instant classic of the weird and unusual, and the series was a cult hit. The first season was bizarrely scheduled after Ally McBeal and surely messed with the heads of more than a few fans of that show. Eventually bought by the Sci-Fi Channel for the United States, it was considered too controversial and never went to air in U.S.
For the first (any maybe only) time in Australia, Popcorn Taxi presents a selection of some of the most bizarre and controversial segments from the show, followed by an audience Q&A session via phone with the show's co-creator, director and host Richard Metzger. BUY TICKETS NOW HERE
